We had our first formal IEP meeting yesterday at Montana's school. Just as we suspected, the school psychologist is diagnosing Montana with PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified). It came as no surprise. With all the research Kurt and I have both done, we felt Montana fell into this category.
Montana was tested by the school's speech therapist and the Resource teacher as well and they all agreed that Montana should be placed in the Special Education Program. This means now she will get a little extra help in developing some skills she's lacking.
They all felt that she didn't need to be involved with the Resource teacher because academically Montana is right where she should be for her age and falls within the average to above average range.
She'll be kept in her classroom and pulled out twice a week for speech therapy starting next year. We really didn't see the point in starting the therapy now since there is only 3-4 wks left in this school year.
Kurt and I did request that next year Montana be placed with a 1st grade teacher who would be better suited to deal with a child with Montana's needs. They all agreed, and the speech therapist said they usually will find out earlier than parents do as to who the child's teacher will be, and she would contact me and let me know.
Kurt and I were very grateful for all the cooperation the school has given and how quickly this process has gone. We had heard a lot of horror stories from parents and their involvement with the IEP process.
